Outcomes & Indicators
Early Stage One
SGES1.1: Manipulates, sorts and represents three-dimensional objects and describes them using everyday language.
  • Manipulate and sort three-dimensional shapes found in the environment.
  • Describe features of three-dimensional objects using everyday language.
  • Use informal names for three-dimensional objects.
Stage One
SGS1.1: Sorts, describes and represents three-dimensional objects including cones, cubes, cylinders, spheres and prisms, and recognises them in pictures and the environment.
  • Name, describe sort and model cones, cubes, cylinders, spheres and prisms.
  • Recognise three-dimensional objects in pictures and the environment, and presented in different orientations.
  • Recognise that three-dimensional objects look different from different views.
Stage Two
SGS2.1: Makes, compares, describes and names three-dimensional objects including pyramids, and represents them in drawings.
  • Name, describe, sort, make and sketch prisms, pyramids, cylinders, cones and spheres.
  • Create nets from everyday packages.
  • Describe cross-sections of three-dimensional objects.
Stage Three
SGS3.1: Identifies three-dimensional objects, including particular prisms and pyramids, on the basis of their properties, and visualises, sketches and constructs them given drawings of different views.
  • Identify three-dimensional objects, including particular prisms and pyramids, on the basis of their properties.
  • Construct three dimensional models given drawings of different views.

Smart Notebook Activities

Demonstrates the different points of view when looking at 3D shapes. 3 activity slides.

Explores prisms and pyramids, points of view and nets. Stage 2.

Covers the basic 3D shapes and their properties.

iPad Apps

App Link
Solids Elementary HD allows for all main geometric solids to be unfolded into net form. An excellent app to allow students to explore the properties of 3D shapes. You can turn on edge and vertex highlighting, unravel the shape into its net form, rotate the shape and change the colour of each face.
Activity to try:
  • Explore the faces, corners and edges of a particular shape, screen grabbing different views, including the net.
  • Use the screen grabs to create your own educational video about that particular 3D shape, using Educreations.
TapTap Blocks brings colourful building blocks to life in 3D. Simply tap any block to add a new block at that spot, rotate your blocks in 3D with just one finger.
Activities to try:
  • View 3D models from different viewpoints.
  • Create a model using clickable centicubes and then replicate the model using TapTap Blocks.
  • Create a model in TapTap blocks and then make the model using clickable centicubes.
  • Create a model and then draw it from top view, side view and front view.
  • Capture your model using the camera and use Educreations to draw the three different viewpoints.
Think 3D - Create and interact with 3D shapes. a variety of polyhedra are available to create your own unique 3D shape.
Activities to try:
  • Build a 3D shape then describe it to a friend and see if they can build it.
  • Create a 3D shape then capture the image and use educreations to record the various polyhedra you have used.
  • Rotate and view from various angles. Draw 2D representations from different viewpoints.
