Outcomes & Indicators
Early Stage One
NES1.4: Describes halves, encountered in everyday contexts, as two equal parts of an object.
Indicators:
  • Divide an object into two equal parts
  • Recognise and describe halves
Stage One
NS1.4: Describes and models halves and quarters, of objects and collections, occurring in everyday situations.
Indicators:
  • Model and describe a half or a quarter of a whole object
  • Model and describe a half or a quarter of a collection of objects
  • Use fraction notation ½ and ¼
Stage Two
NS2.4: Models, compares and represents commonly used fractions and decimals, adds and subtracts decimals to two decimal places, and interprets everyday percentages.
Indicators:
  • Model, compare and represent fractions with denominators 2, 4, and 8, followed by fractions with denominators 5, 10, and 100
  • Find equivalence between halves, quarters and eighths; fifths and tenths; tenths and hundredths
  • Model, compare and represent decimals to 2 decimal places
  • Add and subtract decimals with the same number of decimal places (to 2 decimal places)
  • Recognise percentages in everyday situations. Relate a common percentage to a fraction or decimal
  • Perform calculations with money
Stage Three
NS3.4: Compares, orders and calculates with decimals, simple fractions and simple percentages.
Indicators:
  • Model, compare and represent commonly used fractions (those with denominators 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, 12 and 100)
  • Find equivalence between thirds, sixths and twelfths
  • Express a mixed numeral as an improper fraction, and vice versa
  • Add and subtract simple fractions where one denominator is a multiple of the other
  • Multiply simple fractions by whole numbers. Calculate unit fractions of a number
  • Multiply and divide decimals by whole numbers in everyday contexts. Add and subtract decimals to three decimal places
  • Calculate simple percentages of quantities
  • Apply the four operations to money in real-life situations

Smart Notebook Lessons

File
Description

This notebook was designed for Stage 1 to introduce fraction concepts. Students are required to identfy shapes cut
into halves and quarters, to colour fractions of shapes and to identify fractions of a group.

This notebook is designed to explore teh concepts of equivalent fractions. A fraction wall is provided for students to
move around.

Introduction to fractions for Stage 2. Thanks to Cassie Menne for this file.

Introduction to the 3 different types of fractions. S3

Slice it!"Slice It!" is all about slicing shapes into pieces that are equal in size. Sound easy? It may start out that way,
but soon you'll be cutting shapes that will puzzle you like never before. On completion see the percentage you
cut each part into. A great way to learn about equal parts. From Stage 1 up.

Equivalent Fractions Everyday MathsPlayers try to match equivalent fractions on cards showing halves, thirds, fourths, fifths, sixths, eighths, tenths,
and twelfths. When cards are matched, they disappear and points are awarded. As cards disappear from the array,
the cards behind them become accessible. The game ends when all cards are matched or no more matches can
be made. Players earn extra points for making two or more matches in a row. Stage 2 up.

Chicken Coop FractionsIn this hilarious educational game you will be shown a fraction and your job is estimate the decimal equivalent by placing a nest on a number line. Our hens are mathematical experts and they will fire their eggs towards the correct answer. If your estimate is good the eggs will be caught in the nest but if you’re too far out it all gets very messy.

Fraction Fiddle
Build two fractions that add up to a target number up to two. Complete the numerators of both fractions (one may have a fixed denominator). For example, work out how many thirds and how many sixths can be added together to total 4/3. Look at fraction bars and a number line to compare the two fractions and their total. S3

Pizza FractionsPizza Fractions is a simple, visually-based introduction to fractions for primary school students. In chef's pizzeria
students master the concept of naming simple fractions using pizza picture examples. Stage 1 up.

CandyFactory Educational GameCandyFactory is an educational game that teaches the concept of fractions to upper primary students based on splittingoperations with partitioning and iterating. It consists of three levels: Level 1 teaches proper fractions as part-whole concept.
Level 2 teaches proper fractions as whole concept. Level 3 teaches proper as well as improperfractions as whole concept.Stage 2 up.

Fractions. Smart PirateFour games in one: simple fractions, equivalents, comparison, addition. Simple fractions with denominators from 2 to 12 are randomly generated. Prompts are given at the beginning of every level. 3 different levels of difficulty in each game: Easy, Medium and Hard

Assessment Tasks

Description

Stage 2 - FractionsStudents design a rectangular flag, modelling and representing the following criteria:
  • it must have eight equal-sized sections
  • three eighths of the flag is blue, half of the flag is red and one eighth of the flag is yellow.
Students then design a different flag showing their knowledge of equivalent fractions and using the same fraction criteria as the first activity. Students are encouraged to approach the design and equivalent fraction representation in a different way in their second flag. A rubric and work samples are included.
