Early Stage One

MES1.5: Sequences events and uses everyday language to describe the duration of activities.
Indicators:
  • Describe the duration of events using everyday language.
  • Sequence events in time.
  • Name days of the week and seasons.
  • Tell the time on the hour on digital and analog clocks.
Stage One
MS1.5: Compares the duration of events using informal methods and reads clocks on the half hour.
Indicators:
  • Use informal units to measure and compare the duration of events.
  • Name and order the months an seasons of the year.
  • Identify the day and date on a calendar.
  • Tell time on the hour and half hour on digital and analog clocks.
Stage Two
MS2.5: Reads and records time in one minute intervals and makes comparisons between time units.
Indicators:
  • Recognise the coordinated movements of the hands on a clock.
  • Read and record time using digital and analog notation.
  • Convert between units of time.
  • Read and interpret simple timetables, timelines and calendars.
Stage Three
MS3.5: Uses twenty four hour time and am and pm notation in real life situations and constructs timelines.
Indicators:
  • Convert between am/pm notation and 24-hour time.
  • Compare various time zones in Australia, including during daylight saving.
  • Draw and interpret a timeline using a scale.
  • Use timetables involving 24-hour time.

Smart Notebook Lessons

Description

Sections of this notebook file can be used with students from Kindergarten through to Year 4. Hands from each
analog clock are missing and students are to guess the time using the other hand on the clock. The clocks use
o'clock, half hour and quarter hour settings.

Several pages of analog clocks. Can be used for discussing how to read the time on an analog clock and also
how to write the time in digital form.

An introduction to 24 hour time. Stage 3.
